McKinney bulk trash pickup, explained.
The city gives you twelve free bulky collections a year — more generous than most North Texas suburbs. The catch is what it refuses to take, and how little time your pile is legally allowed to sit at the curb.
How many pickups you get
Residents can request a bulky item collection up to 12 times a year at no additional cost. Past that, a disposal fee applies. It is not a fixed route — bulky waste is not collected as part of your regular weekly service, and unusual accumulations must be requested separately.
Pickups are by appointment only. You must place the requestbefore 12 p.m. the business day prior to your collection day. Miss that cut-off and your pile waits for the next cycle — which is where most people run into trouble.
The size limit
Your pile must fit within an area equal to or less than 3.5 feet tall by 3 feet deep by 9 feet long, or consist of two large household pieces — a mattress and a furniture item, for example. Small items must be boxed and labelled "Bulky." No loose materials will be collected.
What McKinney will not take
This is the part that catches people out, and it is most of what comes out of a real cleanout.

The Freon rule is the one that stops most fridge removals.
McKinney will collect a refrigerator, freezer or A/C unit only with documentation that acertified technician evacuated the refrigerant. Almost no homeowner can produce that, which is why appliances are the single most common reason people call a private hauler here.
The curb-time rule nobody mentions
City ordinance sets a narrow legal window. Items may be placed outno earlier than 6 p.m. the day before collection, must be ready by7 a.m. on the day, and receptacles must beremoved within 24 hours of collection.
That matters more than it sounds. McKinney's nuisance ordinance defines "junk" to expressly include used furniture, inoperative appliances, floor coverings and old tires — and makes it unlawful to let such material accumulate or remain on your property or on the right-of-way strip between your property line and the pavement. That strip is exactly where bulk items get staged.
In practice: there is no lawful arrangement where a pile sits at a McKinney curb for days waiting on a scheduled pickup.
Good news the city doesn't advertise
McKinney is genuinely more generous than its neighbors on two things worth knowing.

Unlike Frisco, McKinney will collect your old television from the curb at no charge. The limit is one per collection — so a media room or an estate clearance turns into weeks of scheduling.
Apartments and commercial properties are not eligible.
McKinney classifies apartment complexes as commercial, which excludes those residents from residential bulky, e-waste and HHW collection entirely. If you rent an apartment in McKinney, the city's free programs are not available to you at all.
Where it all ends up
Worth knowing, in the city's own words: "Material collected through Bulky Item Collection is taken to the landfill." Nothing from that pile is sorted for donation or recycling. We route usable furniture to local charities and recycle metals, appliances and electronics first.
When to call us instead
If your items are on the excluded list — remodel debris, fence panels, tires, a fridge you can't get a Freon certificate for — the city is not an option at any point in the year.
If your pile is bigger than 3.5 × 3 × 9 ft, if you've missed the noon deadline, if you're in an apartment, or if it simply needs to be gone today rather than on a scheduled day, that's us. We carry it out of the house, garage or attic — the city collects from the curb only.
